What is Method Acting? and its Meaning

The acting style known as “method acting” originated in the 1800s. Konstantin Stanislavski, a theater professional, invented this acting technique in Russia.

The basic idea behind method acting was to bring realism into the performing world. In the 1930s, Lee Strasberg and Elia Kazan reinterpreted this method due to the performer giving the character their full attention.

Stanislavski thought that in order for performers to give authentic performances, they had to draw from their own experiences. The idea behind this method was for actors to depict their characters by drawing on their own experiences and feelings.

Let us just say an actor is given the personality of a psychopath. Now the actor may be opposite to the given character. The simplest approach the actor would follow is to draw from their own experiences of feeling angry or absolutely anything and everything associated with their given character.

Different Method Acting Techniques:

Method acting has five key techniques that were developed by Stanislavski.

#1. Substitution

This method entails utilizing one’s own experiences to comprehend aspects of a character’s existence.

For example, method actors would recall a moment when they experienced heartbreak for the first time if a character had recently experienced it.

By doing this, the performer would be able to elicit the necessary feelings in order to provide a superb performance of their role.

#2. As if

The actor’s personal life is the focal point of this strategy. This method is not based on actual events; rather, it is entirely dependent on the method actor’s imagination.

As if—As if, the day before our wedding, my significant other abandoned me. What would take place?
This method engages the performer in the scene and awakens their memories.
With the help of this technique, the actor can discover the truth and break free from the fiction.

#3. Sense memory

Sense memory is a method acting technique used to recall the physical sensations surrounding a personal or emotional experience. The actor then uses these sensations to trigger the emotional responses in their characters. The emotional responses could be triggered by all five senses.

Sound: When you hear dogs barking on the street, it may make you feel afraid because it may remind you of a past incident in which you were pursued by dogs.

Smell: The aroma of perfume has the power to evoke strong feelings and transport you back to a moment when you were together.

Taste: When you taste apple pie, you may be brought back to your childhood memories of helping your mother bake pies for your whole family.

Touch: Playing with plush toys as a child with your siblings can bring back fond memories of your early years.

Sight: The sight of a water body can trigger fear in you as it reminds you of a time you almost drowned in the water while learning to swim.

#4. Affective memory

Affective memory is one acting approach that is most widely used. Using this method, the performer imagines and generates a sensory-rich, vivid memory for the role. This enables them to capture the scenario with an instantaneous flow of genuine feelings.

#5. Animal work

Working with animals’ entails studying their traits. When performers mimic the forms and motions of a certain animal, they have the ability to break free from bodily attachments.

When getting ready to portray the physicality of a role, an actor can observe how an animal moves and utilize these instances to their advantage.

Actors began using method acting more and more to advance their art and go beyond the theater experience as it gained popularity.

Method Acting Examples:

Heath Ledger:

A well-known example of method acting is when actor Heath Ledger locked himself in a hotel room for a month and wrote down his dark thoughts in a notebook, just like his character Joker would have in the film The Dark Knight.

His terrible death prior to the film’s premiere was idealized, with many believing that his overdose death came from suicide thoughts brought on by the going method for Joker.

The audience responded well to the notion of a suffering artist who gave his life in pursuit of his art. James Dean and Marilyn Monroe met similar ends.

However, neither Strasberg nor Adler ever implied in their technique that actors had to go through hell and back to perfect their parts and always remain true to their characters. For a seamless portrayal, they only needed to emotionally connect with their on-screen personas.

While some of the method-acting treatments are intensely painful or even severe, others are gentler. Instead of using a system that implies that everyone else is less dedicated and less skilled, method acting addresses craft in a disciplined manner with the right framework.

The idea that you have to suffer in order to appear credible was something that actors naturally deduced. They dabbled in appealing to people’s interest in both on-screen and off-screen narratives.

Leanardo DiCaprio

Thus, instances of an almost distorted, skewed view of the approach technique include Christian Bale shedding a stunning 62 pounds for The Machinist or Leonardo DiCaprio consuming raw bison liver as part of his training for The Revenant.

Did Leonardo win an Oscar because it was well known that he had ripped apart a raw liver with his dogs? If people had been unaware of what went on behind the scenes, would his performance have still been regarded as extraordinary?

Examples of Method Acting in Bollywood:

Bollywood has many good examples of method acting.

Ranveer Singh in Padmaavat

With his performances, Ranveer Singh always manages to put the audience into a trance. Whether it’s his aggressive character in Ram Leela or his imperious role in Bajirao Mastani, he seems to grasp the task and devour it.

But with Padmaavat, did he go too far in his portrayal of Alauddin Khilji? It was said that, having played the fixated and irrational Alauddin, he was in such a fog that he had to seek professional help.

Rajkummar Rao in Trapped

Rajkummar Rao has received praise from reviewers for his numerous memorable performances. He plays a famished man who is imprisoned in a high-rise building in the movie Trapped, which is one of his roles. To look at it, Rao went three weeks without eating anything but coffee and carrots.

This kind of weight loss could have had detrimental effects on his health, but he put all self-care aside and gave himself over to the job.

Randeep Hooda in Sarbjit

Hooda had to play a malnourished prisoner in a Pakistani jail for the film Sarbjit. In 28 days, he shed eighteen kilograms to fully embody his role in the movie. His health suffered as a result, despite the fact that he received a lot of recognition for his outstanding work.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui in Raman Raghav 2.0

In this movie, Siddiqui portrays a serial killer. He went so far as to scare himself by spending a whole month shut up in a dodgy motel room in Lonavala. This also had an effect on his mental state.

It is important for actors to consider how much they have strayed from the initial approach technique blueprint. Is it truly essential to endure such extreme suffering in order to fulfill a role? Or is the whole thing just a competition to outdo your peers?
